“Tetrapods” are massive concrete blocks (each about two tons in weight and two meters in height) that are used for wave protection. It is a trade name registered by a large Japanese construction company.
Tens of millions of Tetrapods are laid on the Japanese coastline to restrain the force of waves, out of fear of further coastline erosion and of the natural powers of the ocean.”
